Wednesday, 30 March 2011

Northstar Television has been commissioned to make a one-off 30 minute art documentary for BBC North West, fronted by actor Paul McGann.

The Manchester-based indie has already started production on the programme, which has a working title of Hidden Paintings in the North West.

They will be exploring the storerooms of the Manchester Art Gallery and The Walker in Liverpool to uncover secrets of the lost art of World War 2.

“We found a couple of great stories from the two galleries which complemented each other perfectly: one about a heroic war artist from Liverpool who died on the front line and the other about a series of paintings which captured the war effort on the home front in Manchester. Many of these works have not seen the light of day since 1945 so we’re pretty excited about revealing them to a wider audience,” said producer Ged Clarke.

For McGann, the Liverpool-born star of Withnail & I, this is his presenting debut.

“He is a genuine art lover who spent many hours in the Walker as a boy in Liverpool and has brought great knowledge and enthusiasm to the project,” added Clarke.

The programme is slated to air this summer as part of a wider BBC initiative to put 100,000 art works from the national collection onto a new website called Your Paintings."
