I wanted to put this fic up but thought it safer to put in the adult section because of some major surgical squickyness written into it.

Crazed Ferret/Black Hound challenged me a while back to write in a gaping hole in the Hornblower books -- that in which Bush gets his leg chopped off.

So here it is.

or on my live journal at:

Enjoy!

You captured Mr. Bush's feistiness very well in this vignette, as well as Hornblower's immense concern for his friend. Some details do engender squeamishness (and I'm a pathologist who occasionally gets amputated limbs for evaluation--these come very well wrapped in multiple layers of bandages though).

I'll have to look at the novel again, because I thought poor Bush's lower leg had been fairly cleanly blown off. Anyway, the scenes in the book of Hornblower taking care of his friend and helping him to walk again are very tender.

In the books, his foot was pretty much blown off, but, if I remember correctly, in order for it to heal properly into a stump, and because of some infection that set in, the Italian surgeon had to amputate above the injury. So, yeah, there was an amputation. Black Hound is actually working on a portrait of Bush with the wooden leg, and felt she needed to imagine him having the leg lopped off before she could continue with the portrait. Dastier and I tried to service her as best we could.

Thanks for reading that, Estelle! Means a lot!
